Westaway Sausages are looking to recruit a Climate Action Impact Officer who will play a crucial role in driving forward our sustainability.

We want to “Save the planet, one bite at a time.”

We are a small team at Westaway sausages. Being small, we can be agile and do things that larger companies and brands might struggle with. We invest strategically focusing on opportunities with high potential for success.

So why are we looking at finding someone for this role now?

Food Manufacture in the UK needs leadership to address the challenges around sustainability and food waste. We are very proud to have replaced some 20m plastic trays with compostable and recyclable trays made from wood pulp. We are proud to have used AI to optimise our use of resources and improve productivity. We are proud to have designed packaging to reduce logistics and storage by over 20%.

We want to continue these initiatives and ensure we inspire others to change, this special person will help us do this.

Sector Leadership: We see there is an opportunity to change established practises in how food and drink is produced and sold in the UK. We want Westaway Sausages to be recognised as an authority and leader on climate action. We see potential in finding new locally produced packaging materials, we see technology being used to produce exactly what is needed using the minimum resource, we see new routes to market that provide local food to local people.

Compliance: As Governments are looking to introduce regulations to act on climate change, we want to lead and ensure we continue to have appropriate detail to hand to assure our stakeholders that we are taking action that do make a difference. The impending Extended producer responsibility legislation has been deferred but we need to align our processes to reduce our future liabilities

Resource Optimisation: We want to look at ways that our supply chain from farm to fork can be used to best effect to reduce the impact of how we operate on both Climate and the environment. Our packaging redesigns have provided a cost saving despite increased logistics rates.

Brand Credentials: We want to demonstrate a crystal clear commitment to environmental responsibility to our suppliers, our employees and our customers. This is not just action on environmental matters, it is also about culture and support of communities and organisations that share our values.

Innovation: We want to pioneer sustainable practises and prove what is possible. We want to be early adopters of new approaches. There is a huge opportunity to research and find new approaches; we are particularly interested in those interventions that might change customer behaviour to reduce food waste.

Education and Engagement: We want to inspire our suppliers, customers and the public to make changes to become more sustainable. We must be credible, determined and keen to share and collaborate.

We must make changes and we must give people hope.
